Where we're building

Alaska is live. Alaska News publishes daily: borough assemblies, school board sessions, public hearings, statewide politics. Everything the platform learns, it learns in Alaska first. We also measure it: the Alaska News profile tracks the newsroom's output against Alaska's other outlets, and its neutrality scorecard grades bias, framing, and openness with a blinded multi-model panel and a published methodology.

Beyond Alaska, we run foundation sites: civic guides for regions we are studying as future newsrooms. Each one documents the region's civic structure (who governs, when they meet, where to watch, where agendas and minutes live, how to participate) and says plainly that no journalism is happening there yet. Together they track 240 governing bodies, and pages are added most weekdays.

Why build a site before a newsroom

Two reasons. A region's civic structure is useful to residents on its own: most of these bodies have never had their meeting schedules, agenda portals, and participation rules collected in one place. And a newsroom's address should start earning its history before the first article. The foundation site and the eventual newsroom are one artifact at different fill levels: a meeting page that lists a body and a schedule today holds a transcript later, at the same URL.

These are experiments

Eleven regions today, deliberately different in shape: a metro, a farm valley, an island state, a border region, a mountain plateau. Each is a hypothesis about where a community newsroom should exist, not an announcement that one will. As we learn, the list will change and grow into other markets.
